Writing a web page

Keep it short and simple.   Ideally sentences should not exceed 20 words.

Is your page promoting you? or selling something (your skills, perhaps)?

The 4 rules of advertising are a good guideline on constructing your page;  these are that you should.........

  1. Arrest attention - with a headline which says what the page or site is about
  2. Hold interest - follow headline with very focussed text
  3. Create desire - make clear the benefits or solutions your 'product' or 'service'  will provide to a customer
  4. Call to action  (contact details or ordering instructions).   Many people are impulsive when they order something, so make it easy!

Email addresses

You may wish to think twice before putting your private (or even business) email address on the internet as there are robots that 'spider' the world-wide-web to harvest email addresses for sending mass mailings of SPAM.   We use hyperlinked words like "my email" so that the actual address is 'server side' and cannot be accessed by a robot.

Telephone number

Again, think twice before putting your private home number or a mobile number on the world wide web.   A 'virtual' phone number might be preferable - have a look at www.yac.com or www.jfax.com or www.switchboardfree.co.uk.

Some telephone service providers will give you another number with a different ring tone, but on the same line as your regular number, so it is inexpensive..   In the UK, British Telecom call this service 'Call Sign' and it is ideal for people working from home as they can publish the second number and will know from the ring tone if it is a business call or a personal call.
